In 1819 Bunji Tani edited a picture book entitled Kachō Gajō (i.e., Picture Album of Flowers and Birds). It included the twenty-three pictures of flowers or birds shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. These pictures were drawn by Bunchō Tani and his students. They used a drawing style called Nanga whose objective was to reveal the inner spirit of the objects depicted rather than to show their true outer features.
